Properties of Prisms and Pyramids by Mrs. Weisflock's Class

What is the difference?

A pyramid has a point/vertex at the top of the shape, while prisms have 2 bases and no vertex at the top.  Both are 3 Dimensional.  All faces can have their angles measured.

Prisms

The name of the base tells the name of the prism ( rectangle -base prism has 8 vertices, 2 rectangle bases, 6 faces, 12 edges)

Rectangle- based and Square based prism have the same number of each property.
Prisms also have parallel lines and congruent bases and congruent faces.

Volume of Prisms = L x W x H

SA of Prisms = (L x W) + (L x W) .......

All of the faces are rectangles or squares (cube)

Pyramids

The name of the base tells the name of the pyramid.

Pyramids have the same properties as prisms (vertices, edges, faces, bases)

Volume of Pyramids - ????  Area of the base x Height / 2 ?

Pyramids do not have parallel lines between the base and the faces.

The number of faces on a pyramid is the number of sides on the base plus 1.
